Mauritson – 2009 Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc

February 8, 2011

The Facts:

The Mauritson 2009 Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc was produced from fruit sourced at a couple of vineyards. 95% comes from their Estate Hardie Ranch Vineyard, and the balance (5%), from the Coleman-Young Vineyard. 40% of the grapes are the Musque Clone of Sauvignon Blanc; these come from Grandma’s Block within their estate vineyard. This offering is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit was hand harvested and was fermented completely in stainless steel. 1,757 cases of this vintage were produced and it has a suggested retail price of $17.

Mauritson Family Winery is located at 2859 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. They’re open daily from 10-5. They accommodate larger groups and tours by prior appointment. They also take part in numerous special events and dinners throughout the year. Check their website for specific details. If you haven’t been to Mauritson before you’re in for a treat. They have a wide portfolio, and a visit here can be a window into site specific differences from one vineyard to another.

Gabe’s Take:

Aromas of gooseberry and lemon ice fill the welcoming nose of this 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is gentle, yet it’s layered with strand after strand of flavor that keep coming in subtly one after the other. Stone fruit and citrus flavors are prominent here. The finish shows off grapefruit, Seville orange, vanilla and white pepper. This wine is crisp and clean with somewhat firm acidity. This Sauvignon Blanc is delicious on its own, but it will excel when paired with lighter foods.

Sauvignon Blanc is the benchmark white varietal of Dry Creek Valley. This example from Mauritson Wines is an excellent showcase for what is being accomplished in Dry Creek Valley with this grape. For $17 it also represents an excellent value. And finally with almost 1,800 cases produced you should be able to locate it in most markets around the country.
